There is a certain air that permeates the New York Giants. Having a Manning at QB and a stacked roster of elite offensive talents, such as Odell Beckham Jr and Brandon Marshall, you would expect the team to have no trouble racking up points and winning football games. That just hasn’t been the case so far in 2017, however, and the pressure is starting to mount. The New York Giants have lost their first two games of the season and things are not looking like they’ll be getting any better, any time soon. All eyes are on the broad shoulders of veteran QB Eli Manning. The question is simple: can he rebound and bring the team back to the right path?
If you asked Eli Manning what he thought of the New York Giants’ play through the first two weeks of 2017, you wouldn’t get a canned answer. Manning has been anything but quiet about their early struggles and he knows the pressure is on him to turn them around. Manning said in an interview with the WFAN radio station, “Hey, you lose games — you only score 10 points and you deserve some criticism.” Manning said this in the wake of their Week 2 primetime loss to the Detroit Lions. This was the first game of the year that Manning had his best weapon on the field, Odell Beckham Jr, but it did not amount to any kind of production in the box score.
Eli Manning started trending after the Monday night loss when Coach McAdoo subtly threw the 2x Super Bowl winning QB under the bus. Manning didn’t flinch under the railroading and he came out critical of his own play — as he should. Coach McAdoo has terribly big shoes to fill if he wants to bring New York back to the promised land and his handling of the Giants’ early season struggles has not at all been what New York fans could have hoped for. McAdoo has already thrown Eli Manning and tackle Ereck Flowers under the bus and the coach has been hesitant to walk back his criticism.
New York will be traveling next week to take on the tough home town Philadelphia Eagles for a pivotal Week 3 match up. If New York loses this game it is conceivable that they start the season at minimum 1 – 6 due to the difficulty of their next few games.
