The World Changed in 2000 & You Probably Didn’t Even Know

With all the craziness that has occurred in 2016, there is a great chance you probably haven’t heard about the Millenium Development Goals. World leaders from 193 nations have met at the United Nations in New York City to agree on a set of goals to achieve by 2030. While many believe that the United Nations is useless, a lot of good can come from this. We already have evidence from the meeting that took place in September of 2000. As the new millennium rang in, 189 world leaders met to agree on a list of 8 goals to achieve by the year 2015. Below are the 8 goals that humanity aimed to improve by 2015.

So What Were The Results?

Obviously there is no way the results were successful, right? Just looking at daily news, you would assume we are living in tough times. But let’s take a closer look at the world today. Below are the highlights of the first summit.

  • The number of people now living in extreme poverty has declined by more than half, falling from 1.9 billion in 1990 to 836 million in 2015.
  • The number of people in the working middle class—living on more than $4 a day—nearly tripled between 1991 and 2015.
  • The proportion of undernourished people in the developing regions dropped by almost half since 1990.
  • The number of out-of-school children of primary school age worldwide fell by almost half, to an estimated 57 million in 2015, down from 100 million in 2000.
  • Gender parity in primary school has been achieved in the majority of countries.
  • The mortality rate of children under-five was cut by more than half since 1990.
  • Since 1990, maternal mortality fell by 45 percent worldwide.
  • Over 6.2 million malaria deaths have been averted between 2000 and 2015.
  • New HIV infections fell by approximately 40 percent between 2000 and 2013.
  • By June 2014, 13.6 million people living with HIV were receiving antiretroviral therapy (ART) globally, an immense increase from just 800,000 in 2003.
  • Between 2000 and 2013, tuberculosis prevention, diagnosis and treatment interventions saved an estimated 37 million lives.
  • Worldwide 2.1 billion people have gained access to improved sanitation.
  • Globally, 147 countries have met the MDG drinking water target, 95 countries have met the MDG sanitation target and 77 countries have met both.
  • Official development assistance from developed countries increased 66 percent in real terms from 2000 and 2014, reaching $135.2 billion.

Stop Believing The Hype, The Future Is An Exciting Place For Humans

For the first time in the history of the human race, we have a real chance at ending poverty and world hunger. Huge advances have been made in Southeast Asia, China, and South America. Expectations have increased since the last summit. The media is constantly trying to hype up all the negative stuff going on, but the truth is the world is an amazing place right now. There has never been as much peace, prosperity, and hope as there is now. We can be confident the world will be an even better place by 2030. Let’s also never forget that all of us have the potential to make the world a better place. Be the change you want to see in the world.

Things only gets done when someone is going to make a lot of money, very few people do anything out of the kindness of their heart

People do not realize how important this is. Everyone assumes the world is doing terrible, that is far from the truth. The state of the world today is amazing.
