It’s about that time again, and the sweltering summer heat will soon be here to send the mercury – and your utility bills – soaring. Keeping your home cool and comfortable in the dog days of summer doesn’t come cheap, but fortunately, the leading HVAC experts at Goettl have the inside scoop on how to maximize your cooling system and keep costs low. If you’re tired of waging war with the heat – and your bills – check out the energy-efficiency secrets below!

Practice Good AC Maintenance

A quality HVAC system is a great first step in keeping your cool all through the summer, but even the most expensive and well-designed systems wear down and lose some effectiveness over time. To keep your systems working at peak efficiency, make it a point to keep up with proper maintenance. Keep your system clear of debris at all times and make sure there are at least two feet of space between the AC or HVAC unit and any vegetation. Replace your air filter at least once every 90 days and inspect all refrigerant lines occasionally for leaks. You can do many of these things yourself, but it’s also a good idea to call in the professionals for more thorough maintenance.

Use a Ceiling Fan

While the humble ceiling fan may not be enough to beat the heat on its own, don’t underestimate its value as part of an overall cooling strategy. Ceiling fans work especially well at improving the circulation in a room, allowing you to spread the cool, conditioned air from your air conditioning even further without using much additional energy. In fact, the U.S. Department of Energy suggests you can set your thermostat a full four degrees higher using this method without feeling any warmer. Considering a typical fan uses less energy than a 100-watt light bulb, those are some pretty big savings.

Get Smarter

No, you aren’t dumb, but your thermostat very well may be. Countless studies have shown that adjusting your thermostat properly is among the most effective ways to save money while staying cool, but a traditional thermostat makes this process a real pain. Instead, consider upgrading to a programmable smart thermostat. You can program the thermostat to raise the temperature settings when you aren’t home while keeping the air nice and cool when you are. After all, why continue cooling your home all day long if no one is there to enjoy it? Some thermostats can even automatically sense when there’s no one home, cutting back on the cooling even when you’ve forgotten to program it yourself.

Keep Cool in the Shade

It’s simply a matter of common sense that you feel cooler in the shade than you do in the hot sun, so why not apply the same principle to your HVAC or air conditioning units? An HVAC system that’s been sitting in direct sunlight will have to work much harder to cool the same amount of air, leading to poorer efficiency and higher utility costs. Rectify the situation by ensuring that your HVAC is properly shaded at all times. Placing a shade above your system works fine, but for a more permanent – and attractive – solution, consider planting a few trees or tall bushes nearby to block the sun. Remember, though, to keep any new plantings at least two feet from your unit.
